You bought panels to cut a power bill. Anything sitting on the glass between the sun and the cell is money you are not getting back. In most of the country that is a minor issue. In Miami-Dade and Broward it is not, and the reason is what is in our air.

Why South Florida is harder on panels

Three things stack up here. Salt in the air anywhere near the coast, which leaves a film that grabs everything else. Saharan dust, which blows across the Atlantic every summer and settles as a fine haze you will not notice from the driveway. And birds, which are a year-round problem under any flight path or near water.

Our rain does not fix it. An afternoon storm rinses the loose dust and leaves the bonded film behind, and it dries with new mineral spots on top. That is why panels that look rained-clean still test dirty.

How much output you actually lose

General dust and film costs most systems somewhere in the single digits to low teens in percentage terms, and the studies vary by climate. The number that is not small is shading: a single bird dropping or a leaf sitting on a cell does not just block its own area. Panels wire cells in series, so one shaded cell drags down the string it sits in. That is how a small amount of mess produces a disproportionate drop.

How to tell yours need it

Compare this month against the same month last year in your monitoring app. Same season, same sun angle, and a clear gap between them usually means soiling rather than a fault. Look for one panel or one string underperforming the rest, which points at droppings or debris in a specific spot. And look at the glass in low sun from the yard, where the haze shows up that midday light hides.

Why not to do it yourself

Two reasons. The roof, which is the obvious one, especially on tile in the middle of the day. And the glass: panels have an anti-reflective coating that household detergents and abrasive pads strip right off, and a scratched panel never comes back. Pressure washing a panel can also breach the seals around the frame, which is a warranty problem as well as an electrical one.

We use purified water and a soft brush, no detergent and no pressure. Purified water dries without leaving the mineral spots that tap water leaves behind, which is the whole point.
